Past tense simple is used to talk about a completed action in a time before now.
At the regular verbs, it just add ed: play - played, rain - rained
At verbs that end in short vowel and a consonant, we will double the consonant : swim - swimmed
At the irregular verbs we need to learn the past tense form because it don't add the ed: take - took, see - saw.
2 affirmative sentences :
My friend went to school early today.
I saw him yesterday in the park.
At the negative sentences, we use this scheme:
Subject + Verb + didn't + The 1st form of the verb
2 negative sentences :
I didn't break the vase.
He didn't go to school today.
