My uncle had a job in the Civil Service and he used to smoke a lot. When he organised day trips for our family he used to behave like a boy. Today we still talk about the wonderful trips that our uncle used to organise.
The trips were organised carefully, he used to buy tickets and write programmes long befor the day arrived. On the programme was the name of the plase we were visiting. There was even a lucky number on each programme.
All the day he organised games and competitions. In his view the games had to be anti-social. He also organised treasure-hunts, modelling competitions and other. There was a special prize for every competition winner, more exactly, an old sporting cup from a junk shop.
He made sure that were as many as possible people on the trip, he invited neighbours and their children to join. The fun started when we left home. The walk down to the station also used to involve a game, the fist person to see a policeman gets a point.
On the car we used to play one game called 'I know that lady'. One of us would choose someone walking along and when approached the driver sounded the car horn and we waved. The woman wouldn't understand why.
He never tought that the money spent on outing was wasted, he said 'It's not wasting money, it's investing memories'.
